The Anti Gear Snob

Gear is really just a bunch of stuff.

That may sound a bit odd coming from a website that talks a lot about it.

But it’s true.

At the end of the day, your outdoor gear is just a pile of nylon, leather, wool, and aluminum. That’s right, that fancy sleeping bag is just a heap of duck feathers. That $400 knife…. yep, it’s just a chunk of steel.

When you stop and think about it, there’s nothing special about having a pile of this stuff sitting in a closet someplace.

Which is why we don’t actually celebrate the gear.

We celebrate the experiences it enables. The once in a lifetime moments. The epic memories.

Because of those leather and rubber things you call “boots”, you can summit mountains that scrape the sky. That fiberglass stick known as a “fishing rod”, is the key ingredient in breathtaking moments spent on alpine streams, and lazy Saturday afternoons spent trolling the nearby reservoir.

And yes, that pile of duck feathers makes it so you don’t have to come home just because the sun went down.
